Home burglary statistics for the US
About 1,040 home burglaries a day reached the FBI's database in 2024. That's 380,116 across the year, out of 677,190 burglaries of every kind, homes and businesses together.
It isn't a national total. Reporting to the FBI's NIBRS system is voluntary, so the real figure is higher. This page uses what was reported: how many, how many were attempts, when they happened, and how the burglar got in.
When they happen
More than half of home burglaries fall between 6am and 6pm. The hour from 1am to 6am accounts for about one in nine.
Time of day in detail, including why the midnight hour looks bigger than it is.
How they get in
184,257 of the 380,116 had no forced entry. That's 48.5%. "Not forced" is the FBI's wording and it includes an unlocked door, an open garage, an unlatched window and a known key. By state, the share runs from 38.5% to 78%.
Where the rate is highest
New Mexico reports about 287 home burglaries per 100,000 residents and New Hampshire about 30. The full state table shows every state with enough reporting.
What's missing
A burglary that gets written down is the visible part. Insurance claims, shed break-ins nobody called in and burglaries in states with patchy reporting aren't here, and no amount of adjusting turns this into a true national count. It's enough to see the shape: more than half of home burglaries happen between 6am and 6pm, about half need no force, and the rate differs enormously between states.
Those three points each have a page of their own, linked above.
Questions
How many home burglaries happen in the US each year?
380,116 home burglaries were reported to the FBI's NIBRS in 2024, about 1,040 a day. That is only what agencies reported, so the true number is higher.
What share of burglaries are attempts?
6.9% of the burglaries reported in 2024, homes and businesses together, were attempts and the rest were completed.
Is this a national total?
No. Reporting to NIBRS is voluntary and coverage differs by state, so the figures describe reported burglaries only.
