Burglary rate by state
New Mexico has about 287 reported home burglaries per 100,000 residents. New Hampshire has 30. That's nearly a tenfold gap, and the table below ranks every state in between.
The rates use only agencies that reported all 12 months, set against the population they cover. Eight states, including Florida, California and New York, cover under three quarters of residents, and they're listed separately. Nebraska has no 2024 data in the file.

States with limited coverage
These states have too little of their population in the reporting agencies to rank fairly. The rate shown covers only the agencies that reported.
| State | Population covered | Rate in covered agencies |
|---|---|---|
| Pennsylvania | 47% | 117 |
| Alaska | 61% | 114 |
| Mississippi | 62% | 161 |
| Florida | 63% | 87 |
| California | 66% | 123 |
| New Jersey | 68% | 96 |
| Arizona | 70% | 109 |
| New York | 71% | 87 |
Reading the ranking
Read the rank as a rate of reported burglary, not a ranking of how safe a state is. Rural states and cities don't report in the same way, definitions of a home burglary differ at the margins, and a state with more agencies in the system will show more of what happens.
If your state sits near the top, the more useful comparison is with its own neighbours and its own earlier years, not with New Hampshire.
Questions
Which state has the highest burglary rate?
Among states with at least 75% of residents covered by reporting agencies, New Mexico had the highest rate in 2024, about 287 reported home burglaries per 100,000 residents.
Which state has the lowest burglary rate?
New Hampshire had the lowest, about 30 reported home burglaries per 100,000 residents.
Why are some states listed separately?
Fewer than 75% of their residents are covered by agencies that reported all twelve months, so a rate would not be comparable.
